The Tacoma Rescue Mission has operated since 1912
A diverse interdenominational Board of Trustees from throughout Pierce County oversees the work of the mission
The Tacoma Rescue Mission is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity, and by the State of Washington as a not for profit corporation
The Tacoma Rescue Mission is an active member of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions (AGRM), the Tacoma/Pierce County Coalition for the Homeless, and the Emergency Food Network
More than 60% of the Mission’s funding comes from private donations; approximately 16% comes from government sources
The Mission’s current annual operating budget is 3.775 million with 67 full and part-time staff
All programs rely on the involvement of volunteers and in-kind donations

Tacoma Rescue Mission's Purpose

We help all people; including clients, volunteers, donors and staff, to become their best. We provide emergency services such as shelter and food to the homeless or hurting; offer self-sufficiency programs to help lift a person from poverty and break the chains of addiction; support prevention programs and share our Christian faith.

Tacoma Rescue Mission History

The Mission was founded in 1912 by world-renowned evangelist Gipsy Smith. While his stay in Tacoma was short, he inspired key individuals to carry out this important work in the name of Christ.

The Mission began as a soup kitchen and chapel to address the physical and spiritual needs of transient men drawn to Tacoma by the lumber and maritime industries.
